Main Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about Birthday celebrations in the context of Birthday

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a Birthday in the context of Birthday celebrations


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Teacher greets students and asks random students about their birthdays. - Teacher shows some pictures of different countries birthday celebrations. - Elicit from students some ideas. - Students discuss in pairs.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- Teacher shows the students some pictures and elicit the meaning of the new vocabulary. -Drill and highlight the stress on the board. - Teacher shows the students pictures of some countries and ask them what they think their birthday traditions might be. - Students will work in pairs. -Teacher will monitor. - Whole class feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

-Teacher devides students in 6 groups of 2. -Teacher sticks sheets on the wall and ask students to stand up and match them with appropriate country. - Students are supposed to match which situation fits the right country. -Students read and discuss in pairs. - Then check their answers in groups. -Whole class feedback and correction if needed.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

- For detailed reading, Teacher hand-out sheet of papers to students containing questions about the reading. -Students will discuss them. -Students read the texts they already have and work in pairs. -After reading, Teacher does peer check and then group check. -Teacher does a whole feedback.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

-T will elicit some information from the students about their birthday celebrations in their country. - uses CCQs. - Students will work in pairs in order to write 3 to 4 sentences about their celebrations. -T monitor and corrects in there are any mistakes.
