Main Aims

  • To enable students to develop their listening skills (scanning and detailed understanding) in the context of an interview about a life changing trip.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Write a statement on WB 'The trip that changed my life'. Get Ss guess the story they will hear and talk about it with their partners.

Pre-Reading/Listening (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Show Ss photos from Ss Bk and get them think where they were taken and what is happening in each one. Ss work in mini groups and try to predict the story they will hear.

While-Listening #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

Set Ss an initial listening task to answer 2 questions and write them on WB: Where did Jane go? What did she decide to do after the trip? Ss listen to the whole story. Ss compare their answers in pairs. W/c feedback.

While-Listening #2 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

Give Ss a few minutes to go through the items in ex. 1c Ss exchange the information that they remember. Ss listen to the interview again and make notes about why Jane mentions those items.

While-Listening #3 (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

Tell Ss that they are going to listen to Part 2 of the interview. Set a task for specicfic information and let Ss read through the information they need to check before listening. Ss listen to Part 2 and complete the given activity individually. Get Ss to compare the corrected sentences with their partners. Ss listen to Part 2 again and check their answers.

Post-Listening (5-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Set a follow-up activity where Ss can discuss the story they've heard today. Show the task in PPT, give Ss some time to think and get them talk to their partners. 'Imagine you are Jane's husband. Would you support your wife? If yes, how? What would you do to help her? If no, why not?

Feedback and Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Put some of the errors on WB and elicit correction and reformulation. I heard you say .... What's another word for ...? What's another way to express this?
