In this lesson, students are exposed to a new topic through a reading text. After that, the blocking vocab in the text will be elicited form students.They later go through reading text for gist and details to develop oral fluency through a group discussion as a post-reading task. But before that, they will do a task to learn some words about sports, followed by a short discussion using these words .


Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about a popular para glider in the context of Olympic dreams

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of sport verbs and nouns in the context of sports and Olympics
  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a discussion in the context of sports


Stage 1( Lead in) (2-5 minutes) • To get students guess what the topic is about

-Project a picture of a famous Turkish athlete -Students discuss in groups to know what the text is all about -Elicit answers form students quickly

Stage 2 ( Pre-teach vocabulary) (3-5 minutes) • To pre-teach blocking vocab to help students answer scanning questions

-Use the picture to elicit the vocabulary form students -Ask CCQs to clarify the meaning of the vocabulary

Stage 3 (Reading for gist) (3-5 minutes) • To get students to skim to get the general idea of the text

-Give students the handout -Ask them to read the gist question -Ss skim individually -Ss check answers in pairs -Give Ss FB

Stage 4 (Reading for specific information) (5-9 minutes) • To get students to scan for specific information

-Give Ss handouts -Ss read individually to answer the questions -Ss check answers in groups -Give Ss FB Scanning questions: 1- Where was Louise awarded her first international championship gold medal? 2- When did she first enter her first competition? 3. What are the two advantages if paragliding becomes more popular? 4- What are the three air sports that are becoming popular? 5- What does she love the most about paragliding? Stage 5 ( vocab- preparing for speaking) (4-7 minutes) • To prepare students to use the vocab when they speak

-Pictures stuck on the wall -Give Ss slips of papers to match the words with the pictures -Give Ss FB -Students match the verbs with the nouns Vocab questions: Match the pictures with words below: a. Stage 6 (post-reading) (7-10 minutes) • To get students to produce and practice what they have learned

-Give students questions to discuss in groups -Monitor students for delayed error correction
