Description

In this lesson, students learn about 'going to' through guided listening about passengers plans and dreams at the airport. The lesson starts with a warm up activity. Before we do the listening activity learners will focus on the words that they might not know. The students are going to find out about the words with the correct definitions. Then the teacher will introduce them the meaning and form of going to. Then students will practice the new grammar with some exercises. Finally the students will do interview with eachother.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of going to in the context of plans and dreams.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about plans and dreams in the context of travelling.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher shows a picture about people who are at the airport. Teacher asks her students' ideas about the picture; - who are these people? -where are they at the moment? -whom are they going to see or meet? - where are they going and why? -who do you think is going to work abroad for an NGO? -who do you thinks is going to see an expartner? -who do you think is going to do a photo shoot in an exotic place? Teacher gets students interest in the topic by asking questions and getting answers from them.

Exposure (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

To expose students to the target language in context through a text. Teacher sets a gist task first so students listenfor general understanding before focusing on the target language. Teacher writes possible unknown words about the reading text and asks her students to find the correct definition for each. -NGO -voluntary -photo shoot -conference -work trip -meet up get in touch looking forward to -ex partner -experience -come up -degrees Teacher divides the class to 3-4 groups. Teacher gives each group one colour and they all stand up and get their envelop from the wall. Students start finding the correct meanings for the new words. When the students finishes the activity teacher shows the answers to the whole class. Then teacher hands out listening woksheets to the whole class. Teacher gives instructions about the worksheet. Students start listening the context and fills in the correct information in tha chart.

Feedback (2-3 minutes) • To enable students to see to what extent they have understood the task.

Teacher shows the answers on the board to the whole class.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Teacher sets an activity from the airport interviews. Teacher asks students to complete the gaps with a form of 'be going to'. Then students check their answers by listening the sentences from the audio.

Feedback (2-3 minutes) • To expose Ss to the TL in context through describing the target language.

Teacher asks students to check their answers in pairs.

Clarification (5-7 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Teacher presents the powerpoint she prepares for the students. Teacher uses timeline of 'be going to' in positive, negative and question forms. Teacher asks students to fill in the gap questions so they can disscuss the answers in pairs. Teacher does drilling activities with whole class.

Controlled Practice (7-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Teacher handsout the worksheets about 'be going to'. Students first do the activity on their own and then they check their answers with their pairs.

Feedback (2-3 minutes) • To check students understanding of meaning and form.

Students check their answers in pairs and then teacher shares the answer key.

Semi-Controlled Practice (4-6 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

If the teacher has some time, she sets an interview questions for the students. Teacher divides the whole class to two's. The students practice the target language we have learned in this lesson.

Feedback (2-3 minutes) • To further consolidate the TL and allow for some production.

Teacher monitors the students during semi controlled activity. Students asks and answers the questions about 'be going to'. Teacher helps the students when it is neccessary.
