Christopher Webb - TP1 Speaking Lesson
Elementary level

Description

The aim of this session is to encourage students to interact in a speaking activity using their existing knowledge of the topic from the previous lesson (The Expat Files-2A). The main idea is to increase accuracy and fluency and gain confidence in speaking in English language.

Materials

Abc Celta TP1-Elementary Speaking
Abc Expat Lifestyle Profiles
Abc The Expat Files

Main Aims

  • To provide a tohorough review of the target language. Due to Sts being new to this broad topic, a function activity was chosen, in order to review the previous lesson. The target language is " Present Simple and thee Third person singular in particular.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To review & give Ss semi-controlled & freer practice of simple present yes/no questions. To consolidate & give Ss the opportunity to practice +/-/? forms of Present Simple and related vocabulary.

Procedure

GTKY (2-3 minutes) • As this is the first session with the group, the aim is to get to know the Ss and to help them get to know each other (if they don't know each other either), and also to find out about their knowledge and weaknesses and strengths.

I briefly met the group yesterday. They learned about me and the other Ts. We played a T/F game and I will ask them to memories what they had learned from yesterday’s session. Can you remember, where I am from? The following are the sample Qs "What about Daria&Aras? What was the false information about me? What about Daria&Aras?"

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To create interest in the task and the topic and prepare them to the following activity.

The Sts previously had the relevant listening task prior today and they will memorise the photos shown previously. I will re-visit the photos of the activity and ask them what they remember. (What does expat means? Do you know any expats? etc) This also will enable me to recap the previous session and also the new Sts will be able to catch up with the idea of today's session.

Useful Language 1 (8-11 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/writing

In order to prepare the Sts for the speaking activity and encourage them to think about the Target Language, I have chosen the group exercise from the book (Expat Lifestyle Profiles). It is a simple exercise repeating the same topic as the previous lesson which is aiming at the use of Present Simple and Third Singular Person in particular for structuring affirmative/negative/interrogative sentence. After teaming up in two groups Sts will discuss their answers with the other group and complete the task. The same grouping will be applied to the next activity (Useful Language 2)

Useful Language 2 (8-12 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

This part of the session will be the Speaking session straight after the Useful language 1 activity - Through following the guidelines from the T’s Bk; I will divide the class into two groups (Group A+B) with making sure that they have the ideal seating arrangement for the group activity. As the activity suggests that they will do the initial reading and personalise the task through talking about being an expat in a different country which then will lead into the next part (Productive Task- creating an expat profile for themselves. will also monitor and help when necessary. If needed, I will be drilling a couple questions in order to check understanding.

Productive Task / (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

This stage of the lesson is aiming at using the Target Language again and encouraging Sts to be more creative and productive. Each Sts will imagine being an expat in a foreign country and create an expat profile for themselves. This will be a writing productive task and we will be discussing about the countries they have chosen and ask questions about the country and the customs and traditions. I will monitor and help if necessary.

Feedback and Error Correction (5-8 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Making sure they understood the Target Language and they learned more about each other. Before finishing the lesson, I will ask them if they need more help or guidance regarding the target language. Next, I will give general feedback on the task and their overall performance.
