ARAS SARIOGLU ARAS SARIOGLU

Aras' Lesson Plan TP 1 - Typical friends
A1\2 Elementary level

Description

This lesson presents and practises a set of common verb phrases to describe free time activities. The Ss will probably know some of these, so the eliciting stage will help you find out what they know. The listening will allow the Ss to hear the vocabulary being used in context and will also expose the Ss to the TL to be presented in the next lesson.

Materials

Abc Straightforward Elementary A2

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of free time vocabulary in the context of typical friends

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide listening practice using a text about Friends in the context of typical friends

Procedure

GTKY (0-3 minutes) • To introduce myself

Yesterday most of the students had left before the ice-breaking class. So I will just introduce myself once again so the new ones get to know me as well. I will also ask some questions about myself and see if they remember the answers from T/F activity we did the first day.

Warmer/Lead-in - Friends (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start by telling them what I do in my free time with my friends. First, I will draw three small boxes next to each other and write FRIENDS in the middle box. On the others, I will just write Men friends and Women friends. Under the gender named boxes, I will write four of my friends' names. (Ebru Batu Ruya Ahmet ) Then, I will point to one name and say; - I listen to opera with Ebru. - I watch T.V. series with Batu - I walk my dogs with Deniz. - I play tennis with Ahmet. and then I will ask some of the students what they do in their free time. (One sentence is enough) - What do you do in your free time?

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will prepare flash cards before the lesson with photos showing some activities such as: playing sports, watching T.V. etc. Then, I will ask the students to count the days of the week and I will write them on the board one by one. After this, I will hold one card up (so that everyone can see what it is) and stick it next to a weekday and tell the students to make sentences. Say, for example; On Monday, I go shopping. After giving them the first example, I will put them into groups and tell them that each group has to make one sentence only. They will present their sentences and in the meanwhile I will correct the possible grammar mistakes and pronunciation.

Clarification (5-7 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

As all the flashcards/photos are on the walls, I will ask the students to work in pairs and I will distribute a list of all the activities on the flash cards. Then I will ask them to stand up and walk towards all the flash cards and match them with activities on the list that they have. All flash cards will have numbers on them so it should be easy to complete the exercise. When everyone is back in their seats I will drill the vocab for pronunciation.

Consolidation of vocabulary/Listening for gist (7-10 minutes) • To get the students interested in the topic of listening

I will use the first listening exercise on page 24 so they will read the introduction and share with the whole class what the listening is about. There are some words in the tape script that I may need to pre-teach. Such as; - Personal - Feelings - Politics - Movies - Interview - Fashion Now, they know what the topic is, so I will play the recording only once and after that they will check their answers in pairs for exercise 2 - 1.37

Consolidation of vocabulary/Listening for specific information & detail (8-10 minutes) • To make sure the Ss understand what the interview is all about in details.

Before we start the exercise number 3 - 1.37, I will let them read the statements and then I will explain what they have to do in this task. Then I will play the recording. After that, I will pair them up and ask them to check their answers. I will play the recording while they are already paired up.

Semi-controlled practice/Personalisation (8-10 minutes) • To round off the lesson by making sure that the Ss know the word "alone"

This will be the last exercise for this lesson. We will do exercise number 2 on page 24. I will ask students to list the activities that we did in exercise number 1 vertically on the left of a blank sheet. I will tell them to draw 3 columns and then I will ask them to stand up and ask 3 people about their activities using the questions from exercise number 2. The Ss will have to write the person's name down at the top of the column, then put a tick, a cross or A next to different activities. In the feedback section, when I ask them about their findings, I will expect to hear sentences like; - Meral doesn't listen to music. - Buse watches T.V. alone.
