Description

This lesson will focus on a review and questions and answers, and basic tenses.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of wh-questions and questions ending in prepositions in the context of meeting friends and new people

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of basic tenses
  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in personal interviews and conversation

Procedure

Warmer - GTKY (9-10 minutes) • To get to know the Ss – to assess their ability in formulating questions

Briefly check Ss’ names & try to learn them. Give Ss 3 x pieces of paper each – Ss write (interesting) questions for me Collect up questions. Nominate 2 x Ss to represent me. Ss interview “Liz A” & “Liz B” – using the prepared qus. General FB w/c

Focus on TL (1) (12-15 minutes) • To review Wh-questions, considering meaning, form and pronunciation. To review tenses used in the questions

Elicit – what we do when we meet new people? – ask questions Ss find their new partner by matching the beginning and end of a question Ss in pairs match question halves Monitor and help if needed Ss check against ans key. Deal with any issues Ss in small groups match the qus from ex 1 to their tense – considering if they’re present or past. W/C FB – deal with any issues/questions about form Elicit which 2 tenses are not included – consider why (because past perfect isn’t used in isolation, but in relation to other past tenses to show sequence) Drill questions, focusing on clear models of stress and intonation.

Semi-controlled practice (7-8 minutes) • To give Ss semi-controlled practice in the TL

Ss use the questions to interview each other - & see if their answers are the same. Monitor and help where needed. General FB w/c

Focus on TL (2) (10-10 minutes) • To focus Ss on form of Wh- qus ending in preposition

Elicit examples of questions with end prepositions - & consider why they have this. Ss in pairs work together to re-order the jumbled questions. Check against ans keys. Deal with any unknown vocab.

Semi-controlled practice / Production (10-12 minutes) • To give Ss semi-controlled practice of the TL. To encourage spoken fluency

Ss mingle to ask these questions to as many people as possible – making notes of their answers Monitor – take note of any errors Ss sit down & compare/report their answers Take some general FB w/c If time – do some delayed error correction on the w/b from errors noted
