Description

In this lesson Ss will listen to a lecture about the use of GPS, they will fifferentiate between phrases that show fact and opinion. First we will discuss about its use, when we use it,advantages and disadvantages. Then we will listen for general understanding and finally for detail.

Main Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about GPS in the context of opinions and facts about the use of GPS
  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about Advantages and disadvantages of GPS in the context of Use of GPS

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of language used for phrases expressing opinion and facts in the context of a lecture about the use of GPS

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Project a pic of a Saudi female driving a car and ask Ss to discuss between them what they think about females driving. Is it a good or a bad thing and why/ why not.WB:" I think..." Take FB. Now that I can drive I do not now the route,(the driver knew the way) what do I do? Project signpost/street map pic. Ask 'is this for new or old cars?Is it a modern way or an old way of finding the way? What's the newest way? Project GPS satnav pic. Ask 'how does it work?' Show satnav you tube video, elicit how it works, Ask: Do we use it everyday or when we travel to places we do not know?

Pre-Reading/Listening (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Pre teach vocabulary: advantage (if you know English and you need a job this is an advantage), disadvantage, project pic 1. process information, 2.complicated/complex ask/explain what these mean, Hand out task for pairs to match.Take FB Hand out vocabulary list.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T explains we will listen to understand what this lecture is about.Ss read sentences. Play audio,have them check in pairs and say to eachother why,take FB, ask why they think so.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Pre teach: accident,dangerous,research, scientist, Explain what a fact is = a true piece of information, what an opinion is Hand out signpost words task and ask pairs/groups to group them. Pairs check with eachother. T monitors, Give FB on WB T instructs Ss to read sentences in ex4 and prepare to listen if they are F/O/DK. Asks them to listen for the signpost words and what is said after them. T plays audio and stops after first answer. Take FB and continue (pauses depending on their understanding). Ss listen for a second time. Check in pairs and justify answers together. Give FB open class.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

This is a competition (strong with weaker students)T distributes transcript. Ss do task ex6 in groups they check their answers.Winners announced. Give their own opinion about GPS using phrases. Visit objectives:
