In thıs lesson,students learn about the simple past:be(was-were) through guided discovery based on a listening text about where the people were?.The lesson starts with three questions as a warm-up.This is followed by clarification of was-were by using visual materials as restaurant,cinema and cafeteria.Then,there are some controlled listening practice through target sentence and free practice via using was-were structure.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Past:To be (was-were) in the context of Place expressions

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about Past:To be (was-were) in the context of Place expressions

Procedure

Stage 1 • To practice the students to practice about past to be (Was-Were) and I will ask my students three questions to elicit the meaning and the usage of Was-Were structure.

Ask three questions as warm-up session by demonstrating visual materials. 1-Where were you yesterday? 2-Where were you last week? 3-Were you at the cinema last night?

Stage 2 • To clarify the meaning of was-were structure

-Tell them ask their pair where they were last night? -Demonstrate visual materials -Mingle activity around the classroom with their pairs by using visual materials and was-were structure

Stage 3 • To provide a controlled reading practice

-Hand out (English Unlimited,page 56) and pairwork with 1a -Read Tom's e-mail and tell them read the e-mail in silence. - Tell them ask their pairs who are the people in this photo -Check the answers in pairs

Stage 4 • To practice grammar about Was-Were by filling the blanks

-Tell the students complete 1b by using was/were -Divide them into pairs -Check the answers in pairs

Stage 5 • To provide a controlled listening

-Tell the students listen exercise 3 then complete the task -Tell them check with their pairs -Check the answers in pairs

Check 6 • To practice writing by using was-were structure

-Divide the students into new pairs -Tell the students to look at exercise 4b and write a few senteces which are similar to exercise. -Check the sentences in pairs

Stage 7 • To provide a controlled listening practice

-Hand out page 57. -Tell the students look at the picture and ask them who are the people? -Divide them into pairs -Tell them listen to track 2.19 and decide which sentences are true and which are false? -Tell them check the answers with their pairs -Check the answers

Stage 8 • To provide a controlled listening practice

-Tell the students look at exercise 2a and complete the questions -Play track 19 -Play track 19 again -Tell them check the answers with their pairs -Check the answers in pairs

Stage 9 • To provide clarification and practice of Was-Were with their negative form Wasn't-Weren't

-Hand out a worksheet about Was-Were grammar structure -Divide them into pairs -Tell them complete the task by using was-were-wasn't-weren't -Give them about six minutes to complete it. -Check the answers in pairs

Stage 10 • To provide a controlled grammar and language practice(Mingling and monitoring activity)

-Tell the students look at exercise 3a -Divide them into pairs -Tell them rewrite the sentences in the correct order -Tell them stand up and find a new partner around the classroom -Tell them ask the questions and to your new pair as a mingling activity -Listen them while they are speaking and monitore them

Stage 11 • To provide a controlled speaking by using was-were with place expressions

-Tell the students to look at exercise 1b -Ask them where do you think the people are? -Divide them into pairs and tell them discuss with their pairs by using these pictures -Check the answers by nominating

Stage 12 • To provide a controlled speaking activity

-Tell the students to look at exercise 2 -Tell them make a dialogue with their pair by using points in exercise 2 -While they are doing speaking activity, monitor them
