Description

In this lesson students learn about the appearance adjectives and their opposites in the context of a tour group. The lesson starts with a description of a man and a woman in the pictures. This is followed by various exercises where students get familiar with vocabulary, listening and grammar. Controlled practice where students in pairs practise describing people. Finally there is semi-controlled speaking practice which allows students to use target language.

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about how to describe people in the context of a phone call
  • To provide students with freer speaking practice

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To arouse interest in the topic, and to prepare them for the following stages.

Put two contrasting pictures of a man and a woman on the board. Ask Ss to describe them in order to find out how many descriptive words they know.

Exposure (2-5 minutes) • To introduse common appearance adjectives and prepare them for the following stages

Use pictures from ex1 in order to get Ss familiar with common appearance adjectives and opposites e.g tall and short, young and old, thin and fat, fair and dark,as well categories ( height,age,weight,looks,hair). Elicit a few items of vocabulary initially. Ss look at the pictures and match the adjectives in the box ex 1. Ss work individually. Ss listen to the recording 1.43 and check their answers in pairs. Then play recording again and let Ss to repeat sentences.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ss look at the HO with ex 3. They put adjectives in the right category. Ss work in groups and later they share with the whole class.

Clarification (4-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ss look in the w/b. T clarify the grammar.

Controlled Practice 1 (5-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Tell Ss to think of a famous person for the each category and tell them to write names in each circle.Give Ss HO with the list of 10 categories 1) a handsome sports personality, 2) a young pop star, 3) a middle-aged film star, 4) a handsome film star, 5) a beautiful singer, 6) an ugly politician, 7) a handsome singer, 8) a short hair singer 9) a long hair pop star 10) and old TV personality Ss work in large groups min of 5-7. Make it competition -who can find examples the quickest. W/C FB Ss read out their examples. The other group must guess the category.

Listening activity (5-7 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for the listening of a phone call

Ss look at the picture on the board and guess where is the man and describe him. Ss work in pairs. In the w/c fb elicit lots of descriptive adjectives and phrases from the Ss, e.g The man is middle-aged. He's fat. He has short/dark hair. Play recording of the dialogue and answer the questions. 1. Where is Brian ( the man in the picture)? 2.What does the woman talk to him about? Ss listen to the dialogue agan and match the people 1-3 to the pictures A-D. There is one extra picture. Ss work in pairs compare their answers. W/c FB Ss share their ideas.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To give Ss chance to practise speaking using the new TL.

Class devided in two groups A&B. Tell them to choose one man and one woman from the oposite group and describe them using new TL. Group A tells about the people from group B and member from group B have to guess and tell the name of the person they are talking about. Model the activity. Monitor for their accuracy.
