Intermediate level


In this lesson Ss will learn how to express their obligations or the lack of it, using modal verbs. They will speak about what is necessary what is dispensable for them; in a week, month or a year period, using those modal verbs "must, should, have/has to and can.". Then there will be a listening exercise fallowed by a pair work, "complete the table " and "complete the sentences".

Main Aims

Warmer/Lead-in (3-6 minutes) • To get Ss thinking about and working in the lesson's grammar.

I'll draw a chart on the white board, and will ask the student to come to the WB or to stay where they are and tell me what they think about : Must, have/has to, should and can. Which one is representing the highest necessity then the lesser and so on, till we rich the choice point.

Exercise 1 (2-5 minutes) • To help Ss to practice.

I'll hand out the exercise and tell them to fill in the gaps with must or should, in order to complete the explanation. They also can use the table that is provided with the hand out.

Exercise 2 (5-10 minutes) • To make sure that all of the students undrestood the difference between must and should.

I'll give the students a hand out, with a table similar to the one in exercise 1. They have to fill it with what they think is important and what is not as well as what they think is a necessity and what is not. They have to use the modal verbs must and should.

Explain grammar: modal verbs. (3-6 minutes) • To explain in wich part of the speech and when to use modal verbs.

I'll use the white board to explain the 9 modal verbs: can, could, may, might , must, shall, should, will and would. for example they don't take the third person (S). While have to and need to, do! Also we can give advice using should /shouldn't. And must/mustn't are used to give a strong and authoritative advice.

Pair discussion. Exercise followed with listening. (5-8 minutes) • Get the Ss to talk about the advantages and dis advantages of working from home.

I'll give the the head line and ask them their opinion, they need to discuses it in pairs. Then they will do the exercise that talking about the advantages and dis advantages of working from home. And by the end they will listen to a CD track and check their answers.

Productive task(s). (6-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

There will be two exercises in which the first one they need to it in pairs. The other one they need to split in to groups then one of them will represent the whole group. He/she need to get the answers right before the other team member.
