Description

In this lesson, students will develop their receptive skills through a listening activity about the history of perfume. The tasks they will be given will help them to practice the sub skill of gist listening. They will also practise their speaking for fluency.

Materials

Main Aims

  • Listening: To give students practice in listening for specific information and detail in the context of a lecture about the history of perfume.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking: To give students practise in speaking for fluency.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Show students a perfume bottle and ask what it is -Elicit the word "perfume" -Ask if they know the collocation for perfume -Elicit the phrase "wearing perfume"

Pre-Listening (13-15 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-Get sts into pairs and explain them the instructions for the first exercise (Work in pairs and discuss these questions with your partner. Take some notes about your partner’s answers.) -After the time limit of 3 minutes, get the FBs by making everyone to read their partners' answers to the WC -Give them instructions for the second exercise (Fill in the gaps with the correct words from the box.) -After the time limit of 3 minutes get the FBs and make them peer check their answers by asking "do you agree with Xstudent?" -After eliciting the meaning, make them repeat after you and drill the words -Show them the pictures of; Napoleon Bonaparte, Micahel Jordan, Coco Chanel, Queen Elizabeth 1. -Ask WC what they know about these people and elicit he names of the pictures. -Give them instructions for the third exercise ( Look at these sentences and fill in the gaps in these sentences with the names of the people.) -Give the second HO and let them finish in 2 minutes. -Monitor them whilst they are on the task

While-Listening (12-14 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

-Tell sts that they will listen a record about the history of perfume -Tell them to check their answers for the Ex.3 -Monitor them whilst they are listening and take a note if they struggle to understand -Get the FBs -Name some sts as A and some sts as B -Ask them who is A and who is B (ICQ) -Give instructions for the forth exercise.(Work in pairs. Student A, make notes on topics 1-4. Student B, make notes on topic 5-8.) -Ask who is going to take a note on ingredients in perfumes and ask who is going to take a note on men and perfumes -Make them listen it again -Tell them to talk to their partners about the things they made notes on

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

-Get sts into different pairs -Ask them what is the most interesting information about perfume from their notes -Tell them to work in pairs and write 1 true 1 false statement about this information
