In this lesson, students will revise present simple, present continuous and past simple through guided discovery by doing fill in the gap exercises.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask students what various members of their families usually do on [whatever day of the week it is currently]. Elicit answers like: My sister usually goes to school. My mum usually works.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

Ask students to visualize what that family member is doing right now. Elicit answers like: My sister is probably doing her homework. My mum is going to work on the bus. Elicit what tense is used to describe what their family members usually do (present simple) and what tense for is used to describe what they’re doing right now (present continuous). If necessary, outline the forms on the board.

Task (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Give the students their charts. Tell the students that all the people on their worksheets are doing something that they don’t usually do on a Saturday afternoon. The students each have to nd out: • what they usually do; • what they are doing now; • the reason why they are doing something different

Planning (6-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to plan students' reports

Provide a similar worksheets to Ex1 with empty table. Tell students to complete the worksheet with information about their family members.

Report (6-8 minutes) • To allow students to report on how they did the task and how it went

Students should take their chart(s) and a pen and go round the class asking each other questions (you may want to write these on the board): What does ... usually do on Saturdays? What is ... doing now? Why is ... ing?

Language Analysis (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language

Go through the answers as a class, making sure students are using the two tenses correctly. if necessary give a clarification on WB using "Language Analysis" form.
