Main Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about Typical friends in the context of Friends
  • To provide clarification and practice of Preset simple in the context of Typical friends

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about and semi - controlled speaking for accuracy.

Procedure

Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To arouse interest in the topic, and to prepare them for the following stages.

Ask Ss questions from the previous listening ex3 to lead in them in the following ex4 and the same time to see what Ss remember. 1.Do men talk about sports? Yes, they do. 2.Do men play sport? Yes, they do. 3.Do women talk about their feelings ?Yes, they do. 4.Do women talk about personal things? Yes, they do. 5.Do women listen more to their friends? Yes, they do. 6.Do men know a lot about their friends? No, they don't. Whole class answering questions and sharing ideas.

Exposure (7-10 minutes) • To prepare Ss for the practice of Present Simple -yes/no Q and short answers true the context of typical friends.

Ask Ss to look at the previously given HO with ex3. Ss look again at the sentences and ask them if they agree or disagree with what Dr. Palmer says about men and women. Ss have to put a tick if they agree and cross if they disagree with the statements in the exercise 3. Ss work alone for 2 min. After they finish with the task Ss work in a small groups of 3 to compare their answers. Before they start to work in pairs and compare their answers do the task model what you want Ss to say e .g I think men talk about sports and women don't talk about sports, but I think women listen more to their friends and men they don't . As well make language note regarding irregular nouns man/men and woman/women. Model by choosing one female student and say here is a beautiful woman, there are two beautiful women. You can point at any male student say his name and tell here is a good looking man, there are two good looking men.Emphasize that there in plural there is no letter s on the end of the word. Write these irregular nouns on the w/b so Ss could see and memorize.

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Elicit a Yes/No question and short answer by using some of the previous ex.statements but address that to the whole class e.g 1.Do men talk about sports? Yes, they do. 2. Do women talk about their feelings? Yes, they do. 3. Do men talk about personal things? No, they don't. Encourage Ss to make Yes/No qus based on on the statements in the previous exercise ( from Listening ex3) and ask these across class in open pairs to get some FB on their ideas from the previous stage and give some controlled oral practice of the TL. Ss look ate the HO from ex3 and make Yes/No qus in pairs e.g Do women talk about sports? Do men talk about sports?

Clarification (2-4 minutes) • To clarify the form of the target language

Use w/b to analyze the form of the question. Draw a simple table on the w/b to show Ss how questions are formed: e.g Question Subject Infinitive Short answer Subject Do I play sports? Yes,No I do/don't You listen to music? he/she does/doesn't We speak English? They go shopping? you/we/they do/don't Does he watch TV? she watch TV? it have four legs ( point at the chair)?

Controlled Practice 1 (0-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Give Ss HO of the exercise 1 and tell them to form questions. Sample how to make it is given in the exercise he/have a lot of friends? Does he have a lot of friends? Ss work individually for 2-3 min. Play recording 1.38 which will be an answer key for their questions. After the listening Ss check the speakers' answers. They make a thick if an answer is Yes or a cross if an answer is No. Ss work in groups of 3 or 4 for 2 min. After peer check ask whole -class FB.

Controlled Practice 2 (2-5 minutes) • To give Ss practice in speaking and monitor their pronunciation

Ss do ex3, they work in pairs and practise asking and answering the the same questions from ex1 by using information from the Listening . Model the activity with a confident students e. Does she ( Jane) have a lot of friends? Yes, she does. Encourage S to give a short answer. After the model put students work in groups of 3 to ask and answer the questions in exercise 1 about the man and the woman in the recording. Monitor and pay attention to their pronunciation.

Semi-controlled practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Divide the class into two groups. Give o Ss HO with 5 personalized questions(related to today's context about typical friends) and tell Ss to ask these questions related to each other in order to get information about each other. This activity focus on "you" question and short answers. Model the activity with one of the student e.g T: 1.Do you have a lot of friends? S: Yes, I do or No, I don't. 2. Do you play sports with them? 3. Do you go shopping with them? 4. Do you go to restaurants with your friends? 5.Do you travel with your friends? T focus on Ss accuracy. After group practise some of the Ss share with the class what they found about some of the class members. T asks one student from the first group to give an answer about another student e.g Does Ozlem go to the cinema with her friends? Yes, she does, or No, she doesn't. The student who has an information about that particular person gives an answer.
