  • To teach and practice in context the grammar and patterns of verbs + to + infinitives, as well as the forms taken by the verbs 'make' and 'let'

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking practice in the context of discussing rules applying to teenagers, vocabulary (behavioural verbs)

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage and interest the students

The teacher will discuss with the students the aspects of family and will follow on from the previous lesson in terms of discovering more about their family lives. This will then lead into using the verbs of this lesson (verb + to + infinitive and the verbs make and let) in giving examples of family life.

First Activity Task 1 (5-8 minutes) • To introduce to the students to the first task and explain what is required

The teacher will show the hand out to the class and explain what the aim is. This will then be handed to each student and we will read through the 3 questions asked. The teacher will illicit from the students which highlighted verbs correspond to which verb pattern. (Pattern A or Pattern B) (answers are on the teachers notes page 22)

Second Activity Task 2 (10-12 minutes) • To decide which verb patterns fit with words provided

The teacher will show the class the second sheet with a series of words on it and then ask where these words will fit into which group from the previous (Group A or Group B). The students will then be put in to pairs and asked to discuss the answers within their particular partner. There are 3 words within this set that have unique circumstances (answer :They fit into both sets :expected, wanted, would like) The teacher will ask if the students recognise which do this and ask them to give examples of both uses.

Third Activity Task 3 (10-12 minutes) • To correctly place the verbs into the right areas on the diagram

The teacher will draw 2 large circles on the WB which cross each other. This will create 3 sections. The teacher will then show the students the list on the piece of paper with words which can fit into the 3 sections (These sections are labelled Pattern A (Left side) Pattern B (Left side) and the middle section will be unlabelled as it will have words that can fit into both. (answers for this are found on photo copied hand out of teachers manual from pages 22-23 Prepared flash cards will then be held up by the teacher and ask one student at a time to place on the WB where they fit. When the student places the word correctly he/she will then be asked to use this word in a sentence with that verb pattern

Section 4 Task 4 (5-8 minutes) • To introduce the differences of the verbs 'Make and Let'

The teacher will show the class a cut out comprised of 2 sentences and explain that the students will show the differences of the verb patterns. These will be handed out to the students and the teacher will illicit opinions from the students on how they differ. The answer is given on page 23 of teachers book) These verbs (make and let) take an infinitive with using 'To' the teacher will ask the students to give other examples of these verbs in sentences.

Section 5 Task 5 (5-10 minutes) • To match the beginnig and endings of the sentences provided

The teacher will show the class a list of sentences and explain what is required. This will be handed to each student who will then work out the pairing individually and once they have completed this, the students will be paired up to compare answers. The teacher will then illicit the correct answers from the students. answers given on page 23 of teachers book

Feedback and additives (5-8 minutes) • to discover what the students learned

The Teacher will ask if the students understood the lesson today and then, if there is time, ask the students to come up with ideas and list rules for parents....by their children!!!!!
