Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about "when I was small"

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing in the context of "when I was small"

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will put photos of the things kids believed in when they were small on the walls. T instructs the Ss to go around the room and look at the photos and answer "What are they?Which one do you like and why?" T instructs Ss to talk about their answers within their groups. Ss are later nominated from different groups to answer the Qs.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T shows the pictures and tries to make the Ss understand the photos by working in groups and in an open discussion. T elicits the words monster and shark.

Gist Reading (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading task

Ss will be given the reading and they will be instructed to match the reading with the photos. Ss will later check their answers with their partners. Answer sheet will be given to the Ss.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Ss will read the passage again but this time answer some Qs on the reading. Qs are: 1-Who was afraid of something as a child? 2-Who is still a bit afraid now? 3- Who didn't understand something as a child? 4- Who still doesn't really understand it as an adult?

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss will be instructed to write about what they believed when they were small that they don't believe now. They will write 2-3 sentences. They will later switch their writing with their partner and read their partners writing. After that they will pick the best writing in their group. Finally, every Ss will get up and read each groups best writing. Ss will at last come to a decision on whose writing is the best and that person will read it to the WC.
