In this lesson students will listen to a radio programme about an incredible story of a Swedish family who went on a holiday and survived no fewer than seven natural disasters .the listening eill be followed by a speaking activity over their own experiences of their holdays and how things went wrong

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about travelling in the context of when things go wrong

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a while sharing an anecdote in the context of travelling and natural diasters
  • To provide clarification of natural disasters in the context of travelling


Lead in (3 minutes) • To set the context of travelling and the things that might go wrong

Teacher puts some photos of the things that might go wrong on a holiday on the walls around the class and asks sts to go around the class , take a look at the photos and come to a decision on the worst one in groups . The time is set ( 2 minutes ) by the teacher . Note: Teacher encourages sts to walk around the class and take a look at all of the photos . FB: T nominates sts from different groups to talk about their decisions.

Pre- teach vocabulary (8 minutes) • To pre-teach vocabulary needed to do the while -listening tasks

T shows a handout and asks sts to match the words and their definitions in groups .The time is set ( 4 minutes) by the teacher . ICQ: will we match the words and their definitions ? yes will we work together? yes FB: Sts are provided with the answers stuck under their desks.

Pre-listening (5 minutes) • To encourage Ss to predict and think about the content of the audio

T shows a photo of Svanstrom family and tells them that they got really famous because they went on a really long holiday but lots of things happened to them . T asks sts to hazard some guesses about their holiday and why it was so bad. The time is set ( 2 minutes ) by the teacher . FB; T provides sts with a map of the couple's holiday destinations . FB : T asks sts to share their guesses with the class.

while -listening (5 minutes) • To practice listening for the gist and get an overview of the text

Sts are asked to listen to the the audio in order to check their guesses. T plays the recording , the predictions are checked in pairs . Note: If there is a need for listening again , T will play the audio one more time. FB: T nominates some students from different groups to share the answers.

while -listening (12 minutes) • To practice listening for detailed comprehension and understanding the text

T instructs sts to read the questions in ( 1 minute) so that they could listen to the audio again to answer the questions . The handout is distributed by the teacher , after the time which was set by the teacher , the audio is played once . Sts are asked to check the answers with a partner and then listen one more time . T asks sts to check the answers with a partner one more time . ICQ: will you go through the questions? yes will you listen and answer the questions?yes FB: the answer key will be provided by the teacher at the back of the handout. Note: T avoid over monitoring in order to prevent distraction.

Post- listening (10 minutes) • To practice oral fluency by providing an opportunity to react to the text.

Sts are nominated by different colors and then T asks them to stand up in order to find their teammates . T asks them to share an anecdote about their last holiday and the things that went wrong. Sts are asked to choose the most interesting holiday story and share it with the class.
