Description

In this lesson , students are going to do a jigsaw reading about a family with four girls and another family with four boys and the parents who are outnumbered in their own family by the opposite sex so they swap homes with another couple to experience not being the minority parent in their family.

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about families with all boys or all girls in the context of family

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of family with an outnumbered parent
  • To provide clarification of family lexis in the context of families with all boys or girls

Procedure

Lead in (4 minutes) • To set the context of families with all boys or girls and engage sts with visuals

T starts the class by putting some photos of various families on the wall . For example , a family of six with all sons ... .Sts are asked to stand up and go around the class , take a look at the photos and in groups come to a decision on the ideal family or "which family looks the happiest and why" . The time is set by the teacher ( 2 minutes) so sts could discuss their ideas. The ideas are exchanged in groups and the whole class feedback will be given.

pre- reading (10 minutes) • To pre-teach the vocab needed to do the while -reading tasks

T shows a handout and asks sts to match the words and their definitions in groups .The time is set ( 4 minutes) by the teacher . ICQ: will we match the words and their definitions ? yes will we work together? yes FB: Sts are provided with the answers on the back of the handout. T drills the new words and uses her hands to indicate the stressed syllables.

while-reading (3 minutes) • To give sts the chance to skim for the gist and get an overview of the text

T writes a sentence with two alternatives on the board." The parents are happy/ unhappy with having all boys or daughters." The answer is " happy" . Sts are asked to pick up a card from a box and sit with people with the cards with the same color so that they are divided into two groups . T instruct sts to skim their own text in ( 1 minute ) and choose the correct word , sts are given one more minute to check in pairs . The answer is elicited from sts . Note :The texts A and B are printed in different colors to avoid getting mixed up together. ICQ: How much time do we have ? 1 minute Will we read it quickly? yes

while-reading (15 minutes) • To practice reading for detailed comprehension

T asks sts to read their own texts and answer a series of questions individually. The handouts are distributed among sts .The time is set ( 4 minutes) by the teacher so that they could read for detailed comprehension and answer the questions. The answers are checked in pairs. FB : The answer keys are provided by the teacher . students from group A are paired up with students from group B .T asks students to ask and answer the same series of the questions . Note: T monitors and asks sts who tend to read the answers to talk about the answers and avoid reading them from the text. FB: Sts from group A give a report about group B text and sts from group B report about group A text . ICQ: Will you ask and answer the questions? yes will you talk about the answers ? yes will you read the answers for your friend? No

Post -reading (10 minutes) • To speak for fluency in the context of families with all boys or girls

students are nominated by numbers 1- 10 and instructed to stand up and find their partner . T asks them to write an interview between a reporter and one of the parents in these two families . ICQ: will you work alone? No will you write a conversation between a reporter and a parent ? Yes FB: T nominates some pairs to have their conversation for the class. Note: T monitors and provides feedback on the context and language. T provides delayed error correction.
