Phrasal Verbs (literal & idiomatic)

Description

In this lesson, students will be practicing both literal and idiomatic phrasal verbs. There will be a lot of PW and GW. Students will have warmed up by the start of the last activity and the lesson will end with a mingling activity.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice for phrasal verbs in general and to provide clarification of the difference between idiomatic and literal phrasal verbs

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice for productive skills

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

SS will be shown a slide. T asks SS one question for each photo and SS discuss in pairs.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

T will give SS verb and preposition cards. (see handout 1) SS will work in groups to match the verbs with prepositions. First group to finish says banana. Elicit by miming as SS as they have the matched phrasal verbs. SS do ex 1 ) and peer check. T nominates one student from each table. First, Students will be shown a picture from exercise 2, SS talk in pairs ‘ then, given a list of phrasal verbs “Sometimes object goes before the noum” marker sentence do ex 3 PROJECT EX 2 on WB After discussion, they will do exercise 3 by using the HO previously given.

Teach (3-5 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

(Took his/her pencil) “if meaning changes, it is idiomatic phrasal verb” T gives pencil back What did I do? (Gave the pencil back) T tries to touch the ceiling’ Then gives up “ I gave up” did the meaning change?(yes) so it is not idiomatic?(faking it)(yes)

Test # 2 (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Project ex 4 on WB. Discuss it in groups. T gives SS idiomatic phrasal verbs. SS are nominated to match. DO EX 5 SS are given questions. 3 minutes. then check with peers. T nominates a student. if the answer is correct. students gets to choose another student for the next question. In the meantime, hot error correction if necessary. & Drilling Talking about you SS are given HO. given 3 minutes for the task.
