Grade 8 level

Description

In this lesson plan, students learn what cautions should be taken before an earthquake, during the earthquake and after the earthquake. Firstly, as a warm-up activity, teacher does brainstorming with the help of a background song by asking students to close their eyes. As a second activity, students will be dealing with jumbled stories to order actions about earthquake. For the last activity, students will play a web-based game to enhance their knowledge about actions of earthquake.

Main Aims

  • To provide students the steps for avoiding possible harm because of earthquake.
  • To provide practice of the words of necessary steps such as (cover, electric, gas, elevator etc.)

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about a natural disaster, cautions that needs to be taken into consideration before/during/after an earthquake in the context of Natural Disaster

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher comes to the class, greet students and establish rapport. Teacher opens a soft background sound which turnes itself to an anxious mood. Teacher wants from students to close their eyes and just focus on the moment that he/she describes. As the moment turns into an earthquake situation (music starts to change in an anxious mood), students open their eyes and tell their opinios about what should be done. Teacher gives additional tips for earthquake situation and finishes warm-up part.

Jumbled Reading Activity (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Teacher divides students into groups of 5 including 4 member of each (This criterion could change according to the number of the participants at that day). Teacher distributes the piece of papers to each group (The text includes 10-12 sentences). Teacher asks from students to discuss the order and make the event order correctly.

Kahoot Game. (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading

Teacher opens the Web Site and gives the "Kahoot" code to the class. For this activity, students use their mobile phone to join the game. There are some questions about the text in the game. Students individually start to answer each question. The student who gets the higher point will be the winner. After each question, teacher clarifies the correct choice with his/her explanation.
