  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about mechanic basic in the context of users manual

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

show picture 1 and elicit the name of the appliance and it's function (what is it? What 's for? ). Ask the students :what shoud they do if the battery is flat? what are some basic actions mechanics use when working? what are some actions that require tools to complete? Make notes of answers on the white board.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

vocabulary pre-teaching: 15 min hand out work sheet 2 and ask the learners to fold over the words at the bottom. explain that the pictures show actions repairmen do when they repair or check appliances. Ask pairs to look at the pictures and say what action is it. Accept any valid suggestion and supply the version used in the worksheet if needed. Ask the learners to unfold the sheet and match the words at the bottom with the images. Check the answers as a class

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Ask the learners to read the passage individuallyand find the answers to comprehension questions. Ask learners to check answers with a partner. Check the answers as a class taking an answer from each pair.

While-Reading (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Consolidate lesson vocabulary and spelling: teacher tells the student they will read four situations that are related to instructions and try to find a more specific verb from the text. Some weaklearners need to be provided with words and match them to the instructions. task 2 fill in the blanks with the correct words and phrases from the work bank

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ask the learners to work in group of four discuss and write down the name of a machine or appliance that they may use at home or in the workshop and describe how to use it.
