  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about world literacy rate

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows the images "literacy quates" T: WHAT DOES IT MEAN? DO YOU AGREE WITH IT? T: WHAT IS LITERACY? T plays the video "wHAT IS LITERACY" T: DO YOU AGREE WITH THAT?

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T: LOOK AT 4.3, PART 1 TELL YOUR PARTNER WHICH WORDS YOU KNOW LOOK UP THE DICTIONARY THE ONES YOU DON'T KNOW USE THE WORDS TO MAKE SENTENCES WORK IN PAIRS. T monitors and notes the errors. T writes the errors on the board for correction. T: LOOK AT PART 2 DISCUSS AND GUESS THE ANSWERS WITH YOUR PARTNER. WHAT DO YOU THINK FOR QUESTION 1,2,3,4 T gives the handout "Listening 4.3" T: WHAT IS JENNY GOING TO GET DONE IF SHE WINS £8000?(HAVE HER CAR FIXED AND GET HER HOUSE DECORATED?

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

WHAT ARE THE MAIN VERBS?(FIXED, DECORATED) WHAT IS THE FORM OF THE VERB?(PAST PARTICIPLE) GET AND HAVE. WHAT ARE THEY?(CAUSATIVES)

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

TELL ME WHAT SHE IS GOING TO GET OTHER PEOPLE TO DO (SHE IS GOING TO HAVE THE ROOF MENDED, A GLASS PUT IN THE WINDOW) DO WE KNOW WHO IS GOING TO MEND THE HOUSE?(NO) IF WE DON'T KNOW WHO IS GOING TO DO, AND THE FOCUS IS ON SOMETHING WHAT FORM DO WE USE?(PASSIVE) T writes on the board "Passive Causatives" 1) have : give someone the responsibility to do something, but focus is on something. have + something + verb in past particible I had the roof mended 2) get: convince or trick someone into doing something, but the focus is on something. get + something + verb in past participle I got my car fixed. T: IN SPOKEN ENGLISH WE USE GET. T writes on the board "Causatives" 1) have: give someone the responsibility to do something have + person + verb in base form + something I am going to have the builder fix my roof. 2) get: convince or trick someone into doing something get + person + to + verb in base form + something I got John to fix my car. 3) make: force or require someone to take an action make + person + verb in base form + something I made him do his homework.
