In this lesson, students will learn about online shopping and the way the internet has shaped the way companies conduct their businesses

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about selling online

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of the present perfect in the context of selling online
  • To provide practice of vocabulary in the context of online shopping

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Write online shopping and traditional shopping on th WB and elicit ideas about students' preferences -Write ideas / vocabulary on the WB - Ask them why some people do not prefer to buy online/ elicit reasons

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-Ask students to skim read the text by looking at the heading "Worry for retailers as web shopping clicks into place" - have them focus on key words -elicit ideas about the use of the word worry and the meaning of retailers -pre-teach the word reatiling as opposed to e-tailing

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ask students to read the text and answer Question C to check their predictions and find out the reasons why some retailers are worried (task C)

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ask students to read for specific information (task D) Ask them to check their answers with their peers (pair check), O/C feedback

vocabulary (5-10 minutes) • check students undersatnding of words used in the text

-Display table on WB with words and phrases and their meanings (task A) -Ask students to work in pairs or as a firework activity to match words with their definitions -Give whole class feedback -Ask students to do task B/ WO feedback

Post-Reading/writing (15-35 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- Divide the class into small groups/ mix students -Ask them to discuss online selling in relation to competition ie. in what way does online shopping make the market more competitive -monitor while students do the activity - Ask students to write an argumentative paragraph -Have each groups post the draft on the wall and have the groups move around and read each other's essays -Pick good language / point out mistakes -
