Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information in the context of She's Leaving Home for The Beatles

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

For this stage, I will ask them to close their eyes and picture a fight with their parents or any family issues. Then, I will reveal the name of the song and ask them what they think the song is about.

While-Listening #1 (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

For this stage, I will hand them cards of different words that they will hear while listening. When they hear it, they hold up the word. Afterwards, I will check the check with them some of the words that may be new like "clutching" and "handkerchief". - For the final part of this stage, I will give H/Os of the song with missing words. They listen and fill the gaps. The words will be different than the ones we have discussed above. They check in pairs and then they will find the answers under their tables.

While Listening #2 (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging listening tasks

At first, I give them H/Os of questions, 5 questions about some information in the song. They read it. Then they listen carefully and answer the questions. They check in pairs and then we do a quick feedback.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

For this stage, they will do a role-play. The characters will be the mother, father, daughter and a friend of the girl who's leaving home. - I give them a few minutes to prepare by taking short notes then they talk. - As a flexi-stage, I have prepared slips of the song, mixed up. Now that they've listened twice, they try to put it in order. (It can also be done with the word-cards as well in the first stage, after the lead-in)
