Description

Students learn about multi-word verbs through guided discovery based on listening. The lesson starts with a laed-in activity and followed by a listening in which students listen to a conversation and are asked to fill in the gaps. Then they are given controlled practice activities

Abc multiword verbs

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of Multi word verbs in the context of building relationships and networking

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about Networking

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Show students a list of verbs and particles and ask them to match them examples: verbs: call /go/ build/ focus/ draw/look/break partciles: off/ off/ up/ for/ on/on/up -Ask them what the common features of these verbs are -elicit other examples -write them on the WB -Ask them what do you call them -Students may come up with the word phrasal verb/ say that it is also called Muti-word verbs -Ask them what they call up, on, off - Students may say prepositions, point out that we call them particles when used with verbs to form multi-verb words -Elicit the form

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

ask students to listen to conversation between 2 executives about building relationships with clients and put the conversation in the correct order Ask students to listen again and check their answers

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

ask students to underline all the multiword verbs in the conversation Ask them to match the underlined verbs with their meaning

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-show them the useful box -go through form and meaning and pronuciation

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

ask students to rephrase the sentences using the mutliword verbs used in the previous task
