Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency practice in the context of family and friends

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (show Alice sculpture, color photo) (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show picture Ask Ss What is this? Where is it? Who has been to Central Park? Intro Donna Maria, who has a very special connection to the park. Describe her. (She's a very creative person, she paints fine pictures. Her parents were also interesting and creative.)

Test #1 (DM handout) (3-4 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Chest handout A (DM and sculpture), tell Ss they will learn more about DM and her family. They will read the sentences and circle the adjectives. Pair check, WC review answers

Teach (4-6 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

review m/f/p of adjectives on handout, elicit use as predicative adj (talented friend = friend is talented). IF time permits, have pairs think of synonyms and/or antonyms for the adjectives in the handout.

Test #2 (Adjective Match) (4-6 minutes) • Check and extend students' use of adjectives

Chest handout B (adjective opposites match), tell Ss they will match each adj. with its opposite. Pair check, WC review answers

Freer practice (Flash Cards) (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Model with WC, then Ss in pairs or small groups choose flash cards and take turns using words in oral sentences about friends and family. WCFB to share a few sentences. IF time, Ss write adjective of their choice (not necessarily from TL) on blank paper, give to another S who makes up a sentence using that word.

Feedback and correction (2-4 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

IF time permits, provide whole-class feedback/correction on one or two examples Ss produced in the Freer Practice. [Ask: Did you enjoy hearing about your classmates’ friends? etc] On WB, write a few sentences w/ errors to correct.
