Description

In this lesson, students will learn functional language through guided discovery based on recording of a conversation between doctors and patients. The lesson starts with listening for gist and answering the questions. This is followed by matching task, and eliciting the target language(patient’s complains). Finally, there is a controlled practice through putting the conversation between the doctor and patient in the correct order, and free practice via a final role play activity

Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of language used for patient complaints in the context of a conversation between a doctor and patient

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation and a role play in the context of a doctor and a patient conversation

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Lead in by asking the students how they feel today. Does anybody feel ill or a bit under the weather? Ask any students who say yes to describe their symptoms.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Put the students in pairs to look at the descriptions of illnesses and guess which is being described. Write the names of the illnesses in random order on the board and ask students to guess from the list.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Elicit the phrases describing patient's complaints, write the phrases ont the board, check the meaning of each phrase, highlight the form, and drillfrom prompts focusing on stress and intonation.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

#1 Controlled practice: work with dialogue, get students to put the conversation in the correct order; students work in pairs #2 get students to complete the fill in the gap task individually, give selected students the answer key get them the aswers. #3 divide students into two groups, give each group the piece of conversation and, their task is to complete the conversation with sentences from previous exercise(1st group- sentences(a-e), snd group- sentences(f-j) #4 free practice. Get studnets in pairs to write symptoms of particular illness, after that ask them to swap the papers and write suggested treatment for the patients symptom.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Put the students in pairs to prepare their roleplays using the symptoms and suggestions they have already prepared earlier. Monitor and help. When they are ready, ask the students to present their roleplay for the class.
