Speaking Lesson
Elementary level

Description

In this lesson, Ss will complete tasks related to a Cake song named Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps. The reason why that I chose this song is the lyrics can be grasped easily when doing fill in the blanks exercise during listening. Plus, the main aim of the lesson is accuracy and fluency so that they can listen to the song many times to achieve the correct pronunciation and sing the song fluently. I do not think that the song will bore them because the music has dance rhythms and also the theme of the song would be interesting for these young learners as it is about a man who is trying to get back his lover. Love is a much more interesting theme for the youngsters than anything. So, at the end of the lesson there is going to be discussion session on the topic of love.

Materials

Abc Gap-Fill Handout

Main Aims

  • To provide accuracy in speaking, Ss will listen to a song from Cake and try to pronounce the words accurately.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide Ss with the correct understanding of the lyrics sung in a song to enable them to fill in the blanks of the given handout.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To pre-teach the words may be unknown to the Ss.

Words like "admit, confess, wind up, make your mind up" may be known by the Ss. That's why, T will first teach the words with the pronunciation of them to enable Ss to get the words easily to fill the blanks.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Ss will listen to the song as many times as possible so that they can easily fill in the blanks and understand the usage of the words they recently learn.

Useful Language (5-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

T will highlight the structure seen in the song "If you can't make your mind up, we'll never get started" and ask the Ss to spot what is different as the previous course was based on if clauses and Ss would know that models cannot be used with the if clause grammatically. They will discuss "so if you really love me, say yes" sentence as well.

Productive Task(s) (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

In this stage Ss will try to sing the song in groups without teacher's interference. Because this is a melodic song and the lyrics can be grasped and memorized easily Ss would love it. After that T will ask about what the Ss understand about the song and they will talk about love.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

As the main aim of the lesson is accuracy, T will focus on the correct pronunciation of the words. During the previous stage T observes the groups discreetly so that s/he can do error correction and give feedback at this stage. There might be problems with the pronunciation of words like "admit and confess". T will highlight these words.
