Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Gerunds and infinitives in the context of Hobbies and common activities

Subsidiary Aims

  • Writing
  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a Conversa in the context of Hobbies and routine activities.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will talk to the students about how I like to play tennis. I will then write four marker sentences on the WB related to different tennis actions.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

In the first test stage, I will provide the students with a test (Test 1 Q1) to determine their level of knowledge on gerunds and infinitives. When the students have completed the test, I will ask them to mingle with one another to try and find the correct answers to the items they did not know.

Teach (12-15 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

At the beginning of the clarification will ask the students to complete Questions 2 and 3 to help them apply any knowledge they have gained from the mingling activity. During the clarification stage, I intend to give the students the necessary information on the WB for them to be able to work out the rules for gerund and infinitive use by themselves. Using elicitation I intend to guide the students towards understanding the relation between gerunds and certain verbs as well as prepositions. And similarly to understand the relation between infinitives, adjectives, certain verbs, and as an expression of reason or purpose. At the end of stage they will complete Tests 2 and pair check.

Test #2 (6-8 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Next, I will ask the students to complete Questiond 2 and 3 to help them apply any knowledge they have gained during the clarification stage. At this stage, I will provide the students with a group exercise to complete. They will assess each other’s results and I will provide an answer key. Lastly, to ensure that the students have fully comprehended the rules for gerunds and infinitives, I will provide them with one last group exercise, the answer to which they will have to go and look for outside. Any additional questions will be dealt with before moving on to freer practise.

Free practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

During freer practise, the students will be required to complete Test 3 in groups and demonstrate the necessary grasp of rules governing gerunds and infinitives. Once they have done that, they will be given the opportunity to talk amongst themselves describing an activity that they like, such as a hobby. They will be free to choose any topic, but I shall be monitoring to ensure that they use the TL correctly in their practise. Any errors picked up here will be addressed in a brief delayed error correction at the end.
