Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about things to do in NYC in the context of sightseeing

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of sigh

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Write on WB ""What can you do for fun in NYC?" "Take a few moments to discuss with your partner" [allow a few moments for them to discuss] Elicit responses. Write them on the WB. [show slide with 5 things to do] Discuss the 5 things to do.

Pre-Teach Vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To allow students to become familiar with the words they will encounter in the text

Ensure students understand terms: ferry umbrella Broadway Show Have photos to elicit. Write on the board with the other things about NYC.

Prediction Task (5-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and prepare them for the context

Show photo of man and woman outside a hotel in the rain. "This is Emma and Ethan" [write on WB] "Where are they?" "How is the weather?" "What do Ethan and Emma decide to do?" Take a moment to speak (mime) to your partner and answer these questions. [give a couple of minutes] FB -- Write some guesses on the WB to refer to after listening

Gist Listening (3-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening tasks

Let's see if we were right! [Play audio] Discuss with your partner. Were you right? WCFB Did anyone guess all three? Let's go through the questions. Elicit answers. Make sure they understand they ended up at a Broadway show.

Listening for detail (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

Chesting of handout. Listen again and fill in the blanks with the words you hear. Pass out handout. Play audio. Monitor for issues (spelling, difficulties) Replay the audio if needed. Pair check. WCFB, Error Corrections if needed.

Post Listening (5-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Put in pairs. Emma and Ethan. Now you will read. If you are Emma read this (point). If you are (Ethan) read this (point). Get a student to volunteer or choose one to model the exercise. At the end of model, make sure to let them know to switch. You have 6 minutes. Give script. [6 min] Monitor for any error corrections. Allow more time if each of the students haven't had a chance to read. FB

Freer Practice (10-13 minutes) • To provide students with freer speaking practice for accuracy.

Put in pairs. Work with your partner. Make a list of places to visit in Istanbul. You have 2 min Take FB. Write responses on the WB. Elicit how we would get to some of the places (tram, metro, bus, ferry). [Project script on WB] Emma and Ethan will now be in Istanbul. Correct the dialogue. Model with student. Student is Emma, I am Ethan. You have 5 min. [5 min] Monitor. Listen for errors. Take FB. Let students say what they said.

Free Practice (if time allows) (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with freer speaking practice for accuracy.

Divide class into 2-3 groups and give them each a photo of a famous place (Colosseum, Sydney Opera House, and Eiffel Tower) and have them discuss things they think you can do at that site or in that city. Instructions: Your group will have a picture of a famous place. I want you to discuss with each other and make a list of things to do in that city.
