Description

In this lesson, students learn about interview vocabulary through the reading text about tips to do well at the interviews. The lesson starts with a video about an interview. This is followed by a reading text where students read and relate tips about a good interview. Finally, there is practice through questions via a final speaking activity.

  • To provide clarification and practice of tips for interview lexis in the context of "dress smartly, speak clearly, answer briefly"

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide scan and detailed reading practice using a text about tips for a good interview in the context of advices.

Procedure

Stage 1 (Lead in) (3-5 minutes) • To introduce the topic and make the context of the topic understood by the Ss

-Have smartboard ready for the interview video -Get the Ss to watch the video about a job interview on the smartboard. Then ask them , who those people are, what they are doing, where they are, what this video is about to give the Ss a main idea about the subject. Who are those people? What are they doing? Where are they? What is this video about?

Stage 2 (Look at the photos and decide which type of interview they are) (2-3 minutes) • to introduce the types of interviews

-Get Ss to look at the photos on page 14. -Get them to decide which type of interview they are from the list in ex. 1a. -Ask Ss to explain their reasons for their decisions. Look at the photos on pages 14 and 15. what do you see? Now look at part 1a, read them. Tell me what kind of an interview it is in the picture on page14 and then 15.

Stage 3 (asking questions about "the real you") (3-5 minutes) • To provide the meaning of "the real you" concept

-Elicit the meaning of "the real you". -Ask questions about it. What is "the real you?" When do you feel "the real you?" Who can see "the real you?" What does "the real you" do when you are alone at home?

Stage 4 ( question answer with groups of three students) (3-5 minutes) • to practice the types of interviews

-Put Ss in groups of 3 and get them to look at the questions in ex. 1b. -Monitor and assist with vocabulary. -Nominate 1 person from each group to provide feedback on the task. -Focus on what the Ss found most interesting rather than dealing with all questions in task. Which types of interview above have you experienced? Which will you experience in the future? Do you think it is possible to show 'the real you' in a short interview? Why / Why not?

Stage 5 (Brainstorming dos and donts of job interview) (3-5 minutes) • To make students think about vocabulary of interview rules

-Ss continue to work in pairs to brainstorm dos donts of job interviews. -T boards answers. Students work in pairs. They try to find rules about interviews. For example: What should or shouldn't a person do before or during an interview?

Stage 6 ( Pre-teaching vocabulary) (3-5 minutes) • To provide the meanings of some phrases before focusing on the vocabulary activity.

-Pre- teach 'show enthusiasm', 'answer briefly', 'shale hands firmly'; 'send references', 'dress smartly', 'speak clearly', 'avoid eye contact'. Before the vocabulary study, teach Ss target vocabulary. Put Ss in groups of 3. Give each group HO which includes matching activity. In this activity, there are meanings and example sentences of the target vocabulary.

Stage 7 (Checking students suggestions and discussion about them) (3-5 minutes) • To provide a vocabulary practice in order to see if any of Ss' suggestions are in the target vocabulary list.

-Get Ss back in 3s to see if any of their suggestions are in the list in 2a. -SS discuss which of things should, shouldn't and might be done at an interview. -Monitor and provide vocabulary support if needed using CCQ. Put the groups in groups of 3. Ask each group if they have common phrases with the phrases in the book. Then make Ss discuss which of them should shouldn't or might be done. Help Ss with vocabulary if needed.

Stage 8 (focusing on the reading text) (5-7 minutes) • To introduce the reading text and then check the activity in ex. 2a.

-Give Ss 5 mins to read the text on page 14 then put them back in groups to check their predictions in ex. 2a. Tell the Ss that they have 5 minutes to read the text "5 Tips to help you do well at interviews". Put them back in their groups. Nominate 1 student from each group and get them to tell their predictions again. Check the answers.

Stage 9 (Answering the questions) (3-5 minutes) • To practice reading skill, students will answer the questions)

-Ss continue in their groups to answer the questions in ex. 3 Put ss in groups. Make ss answer the questions in ex.3 by discussing each other. Give feedback for the answers.
