Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about haunted hotels in the context of strange happenings

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of prepositions in the context of where Fred the ghost is

Procedure

Warmer/Pre-reading (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will set the context using projections fo ghosts, castles, a priest and a haunted house onto the whiteboard. I will ask students to talk about what they see and identify some of the pictures.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students will use their reading for gist skills to identify key parts of the text. For example, do people hear strange things in the hotel? They will do this task using a handout.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students will practice reading for detail using a true or false question sheet designed to test their ability on collecting information. They will work together which will encourage them to discuss and read in more detail to clarify their answers.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

As a group we will talk about whether we'd like to go to haunted houses/castles. We will discuss why or why not.

sub aim task • To test student's knowledge of location prepositions

Demonstrate prepositions using Fred the ghost and test the student's knowledge of location prepositions.Teach and clarify what each preposition is. After this, test the students again by giving them their own ghosts and instructions on where to place them around the classroom
