Description

In this lesson, students read an article about plastic rubbish being washed up on beaches around the world. After lead in to the topic, students predict the content of the article from extracts. Then they skim the article and answer some gist questions. Further comprehension practice is done through a true/false task. Finally, students discuss their reaction to the text.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-have the projector ready to use in different stages of the lesson -project a picture of different plastic products (OHP) -GW (3 ss) -make a list of all plastic products you use in a typical day -monitor WC FB

Pre-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-PW -The article you are going to read talks about ‘the infinite number of plastic products that fill our lives.’ -read some lines from the article -what do you think they are talking about? -ICQ Do you write about these lines? [No] Do you discuss with you partner? [Yes] Are the lines from the text that you are going to read? [Yes] -pass out HO1 -ss predict the content of the text in pairs -monitor -WC FB

While-Reading #1 (10-13 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

-then read through the article quickly. You have 3 minutes -which of your predictions were correct? -which were not? -face down the HOs -ICQ: How much time do you have? [3 minutes] Do you compare the text with your predictions in pairs? [No] -pass out HO2 -ss skim the text -pair check -monitor -WC FB

While-Reading #2 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

-PW -Match the highlighted words in the article with their meanings in the box. -you have 3 minutes ICQ: What words do you match with their meanings? [Highlighted words] Do you do in pairs? Post-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned
