Description

This is a writing aimed class, with a sub aim of speaking. The class is intended to have fun elements and be quit fun. The grammar has been explained with reference to future plans and now the SS will have a mostly activity based lesson to focus on this context.

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a Games in the context of Predictions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Have pictures of different forms of fortune telling, like crystal balls, tea leaves, horoscopes and palm reading. Elicit from the SS the possible context what is this? What is it for? (Future) Give them the vocabulary predictions and future telling. -Project Q1b on the board with 'Whats going to happen?' and 'Going to' in bold above it. -Then in a WC exercise ask the class for the answers to Qb and model the sentences for them to listen to. Then ask some to repeat back. Use a mystic voice.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

-Using the reading exercise on page 68. Have the SS get into pairs. They must read for gist the text called 'Name Behind The Method' Their task is to match the headings with the correct paragraphs. -Have them check their neighbours work and compair in a group discussion. -CCq what the different methods are Do fortune tellers look into crystal balls to predict the future? (Yes) Can you predict your future by looking at tea leaves? (Yes) Do fortune tellers look at people feet to predict the future? (no) -Have the SS read the text again for detail to answer true or false for the Q's in B and then they will find the answers under their tables. -Have the SS talk in groups to guess the meaning of the highlighted words ICQ Show me the highlighted words? Then ask for answers in WC -Explain the words through drawings and drilling.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

- Project on the board model sentences clearly showing the different rules for different pronouns in relation to the grammar e.g. I am/she is/they are. -Have a empty outline of a crystal ball underneath. -Then draw pictures of stick men doing something inside the ball for the class to drill the language e.g. a girl flying a kite. Elicit What is she going to do? -Drill the answer and have a few SS come up to draw inside the ball (provide ideas on paper slips e.g. listen to music) and drill again. -Show contractions with fingers. - CCQ Do we use this grammar to talk about plans too? (Yes) Do we use 'is' for girls, boys and animals? (Yes) Do we use present tense verbs after going to? (Yes)

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

-Have the SS use dice with verbs written on the six sides. They are to get into groups and take it in turns to roll the dice. They then must make a sentence of prediction with the verb the dice lands on. -leave the dice on the table for SS to refer to the verbs it contains. -For the SS give them a copy of teach-this horoscope handout and some tac. -On the board have the sentence 'You are going to........' The SS must then fill out several sentences for the SS to predict the future of someones horoscope. -They must write an unlucky horoscope and a lucky horoscope. The sign they get will be random.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

-Have the SS read each others work in pairs and look for any mistakes. -Have the SS stick their horoscopes they wrote around the room, then the SS must go and find their star sign and read their horoscope. -They can then talk to a friend in pairs about what their future is, I will ask for some feedback of individual SS. -Then for a back up exercise trace my palm on the board and indicate my life lines. Have the SS then look at each others hand and predict their partners future.
