In this lesson, the Ss will study verbs, love, like, hate, verb+ing forms.

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of things you like and don't like.


Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Dice game: Ss will roll a dice and tell each other their favourite things. Each side of dice will have a word: city, sport, music, film, book and colour. Depending on the side they will give their answers, such as: 'My favourite color is blue.' etc. Do this 2-3 times depending on class size. At the end ask Ss if they had same favourites?

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Elicit instructions for HO1 part1- Match the words with pictures. Peer check and W/C answers. Work on meaning and pronunciation. Examples and CCQs for the words and phrases. See Language Analysis doc. Listening CD2-61. Practice drilling individually and chorally. Stick hate, don't like, like, love pictures on the board. Elicit meanings. Give examples if needed: I __________ cats. I _______ ________ soap operas. I _______ horror films. I ________ shopping for clothes. HO1 part 2 - Match phrases to pictures. Nominate a few Ss to share answers or depending on the class size ask each Ss to share one or two sentences.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Peer check. Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

HO2: Write the verb+ing forms. Peer check. W/C feedback. Are any of these sentences true for you?

Semi-Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

HO3 : p86 and p91. Divide Ss into As and Bs. Give As HO3 -A, Bs HO3-B. Ask them to write down questions such as "Do you like horror films?" In one column guess your partner's answer. In another column check or cross the answers from your partner. And see if your guesses were correct. W/C feedback: Are any of your answers correct?

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ask Ss to write down 3 true sentences and 3 false sentences using love, like, don't like and hate. Say your sentences to your partner and let him/her guess if it is true or false. Example: A: I love going to museums. B: I think that's true. or No, it's false. W/C feedback. Nominate Ss to tell about their partners.
