Main Aims

  • To provide practice the past simple tense.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide listening and concentrate how the -ed is pronounced.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I'll show them a picture of a genie and ask them, -What's this? -Why do people love genies? -What's other word to say 'need/wish? -Then, I'll give each one a paper with a vocab. I'll encourage them to look around the class and match the word to the right picture. - Now, I'll draw a timeline on the W/B and ask them about the vocab 'verbs'. -Are they in the future? -Are they now? -So, they're in the _______ (past)

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

-Now, I'll ask them to read the text and try to underline the Past simple verbs. -Then, I'll ask them to check in pairs and later open pair feedback. - I'll ask them to work in pairs and try to number the pictures from 1-9. Then, I'll encourage them to join me and write down the answers on the board by turn. -They'll listen to the end of the story to know where are they? Then, I'll ask them to read p.112 to know whether it's Sydney, Australia or Sydney, in north east Canada? is it easy to do a mistake like this?

Stage 2 (15-20 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

- Under the timeline, I'll write down a sentence in the past simple tense and ask them, - Is it a question? (No) - Is it a negative sentence? (No) - Is it a positive sentence? (Yes) (+) It landed. 1- What's 'it'? verb or subject ? - Subject pronoun 2- What's 'landed'? adjective or verb? - Verb + -ed *So, the form is ( Subject pronoun + Verb + -ed or -d - or -ied ) -I'll encourage them to help me write the negative and question form. (-) It didn't land. (?) Did it land? -Then, I'll ask them to try to answer exercise 2a IND then they'll check in pairs and later group feedback. - In pairs, I'll encourage them to complete the questions using Was,Were or Did. I'll do the first one with them then after they finish all of it. I'll ask them to compare their answers to the answer keys on the wall.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

- I'll clarify to them that the verbs we use in the past simple tense can be pronounced in three different ways '/d/ or /t/ or /id/'. - I'll put three cards on the board having each sound. Then, I'll give each one a card with a verb in the past simple tense. Ss have to listen to the audio carefully in order to stick each word under the correct sound. I'll demo one with them. -I'll play the audio twice so they think on the first time and make the right decision. -Now, I'll give them a piece of paper ( Find someone who...) and ask them to move around the class. Ask 'Did you....?' questions and if the answer is yes, write down their name.
