Description

In this lesson students will practice listening for gist and details in the context of doing something different. The lesson starts with a lead -in based on the same subject followed by a simple activity just to familiarize the students with the context of the listening tape. After that stage, they will listen to the recording and answering the questions related to it. The lesson is finished once they go through all the activities and have a freer practice on oral fluency which is the sub-aim.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice in listening for gist and detailed in the context of doing something different.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency in the context of doing something different.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Starting the lesson with a very comment on how I'd love to change my field of studies if I could go back in time and then I ask the students if it was up to them what would they choose to change about their field of study or career. Then give the students instructions about the first exercise which is the lead-in task exercise #1 in the book, giving them enough time to achieve it.

Pre-teaching vocabulary (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Starting this stage with introducing some new vocabulary such as 'plumber, colleagues, fed up, rude, exhausted, desperate and bring up'. using a vocab exercise handout making it as student centered as possible because vocab is not the main aim. Then give them a hand out of a matching activity of words and definitions or sentences.

While-Reading/Listening #1, exercise #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

This is the second activity from the book after the lead-in activity because it familiarizes them with the context of the listening tape. First, they will be given clear instructions on what to do which is to prepare/read these questions carefully, and then listen to answer the questions individually. Followed by a pair check then feedback. Asking them if they want to hear the tape one more time.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

This stage takes place after the gist task which is exercise #2. As for this task shown in exercise #3, they will have enough preparation time to read the question carefully and then listen again to the same audios in a more detailed way looking for detail answers in a true or false questions. As usual asking the students if they want to listen again.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned 'follow up oral fluency'

According to the students number, they will be divided in to groups or pairs to have a freer speaking practice after telling them the instructions and giving them enough time up to 3 minutes to prepare few sentences they are going to use. Finally, they start speaking to each other for some time. and before the lesson ends we will have a feedback talk that lasts for 3 minutes minimum.
