Main Aims

  • To provide practice in the reading for gist and details in the context of news stories

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide oral fluency in the context of news stories

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and generate interest in the topic

SS will be given some news excerpts from daily newspapers about topics of general interest to them. SS will be asked to work in small groups/pairs (depending on the number of students) to read for gist and write the main idea of each excerpt. T will give content feedback and ask CCQs to introduce the topic.

Pre-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T will ask ss to match vocabulary words with their correct meaning. The words are anticipated difficult words in the text that will help ease their reading for both gist and details in the following activities. SS work individually and then check in pairs. T will provide whole class content feedback.

While-Reading #1 (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with practice on reading for gist

SS will individually start reading the texts for the first time. SS will be asked to match the headlines with the reading excerpts they will be given to read. SS will check their answers in pairs/small groups. T will provide whole class content feedback.

While-Reading #2 (8-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

T will provide ss with detailed questions on the texts to answer in small groups/pairs. SS will read the text for the second time, but this time for more detailed reading. SS check answers in small groups/pairs. T will provide whole class content feedback.

Post-Reading (10-15 minutes) • To provide ss with an opportunity to speak freely in the context of news stories

SS will be asked to choose one favourite story of all the news excerpts given and comment on it indicating if the story has a happy ending or no and if it is romantic, believable or funny. SS will discuss their opinions together in a small group. T will provide content feedback by asking SS what they have learnt about their friends opinions and whether they agree or no.
