Description

In this lesson, Ss will read about favourite places, talk about their favourite places and learn/review vocabulary.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about my favourite places in the context of favourite places.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of clothing words and some adjectives in the context of favourite places
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of my favourite things

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask Ss: 'What is your favourite place?' ( Elicit from Ss to give examples for 'place': shop, cafe, restaurant etc). Demonstrate asking an answering: "My favourite place is called Satuti Restaurant." Ss work in pairs. For feedback, nominate a few Ss to tell about their partners' favourite place.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Find opposites: Vocabulary work. Show HO and ask students to draw a line between opposite words. Work with a partner. For feedback, ask a few student to write them on the board. Show pictures of Tyrone, Sunee, Keira. Ask Ss to match names with pictures. Give each group a name and ask them to make a guess. Hand out the reading and let them make check if their predictions were correct.

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Write clothes shop, cafe and restaurant on the board. And ask Ss to match places with people. For feedback, first peer check than W/C answers. Match clothes to words. Pair work. For feedback Nominate Ss to answer.

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Give Ss handout with questions about the text. Work with a partner and answer the questions. For feedback, nominate a few Ss to answer questions.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Write 6 questions using the words from the handout. Peer check questions. Pair work: Each S will ask their 6 questions to their partner. And take turns. Once finish, each S will tell the class two things about their partner.
