This lesson changes the context from the previous lessons, but gives ss the opportunity to practice the TL from previous lessons in the productive skill of writing.

Main Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of an informal email in the context of a new penfriend

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of informal email words (hi, best wishes, etc.) in the context of a new penfriend
  • To provide practice of present simple and present continuous in the context of everyday activities

Procedure

Stage 1 (Lead-in) (3-5 minutes) • To get Ss interested in the topic

-Have the projector ready to use in different stages of the lesson -show pictures of penfriend websites on projector1 -ask some questions to get Ss interested in the topic What do you see here? What kind of websites are these? Why do people visit penfriend websites? Do you ever visit a penfriend website? Do you have a penfriend?

Stage 2 (Exposure) (5-6 minutes) • To set the scene for the text, and predict the content of emails to a new penfriend

-GW -Ss brainstorm about "What do we usually write to a new penfriend?" -Set a time limit of 2 min - Get WC FB -Draw a mind-map of Ss' ideas -PW -Ss discuss the questions on the Projector 2 Why are you studying English? Who do you live with? What do you do in your free time? -Give instructions for HO1 Fold HO1 Read the email Compare the information about Chiara with the information about you -Model the instructions -Pass out HO1 -CCQ for (from, to, subject) Who wrote this email? Who receives the email? What is the email about? -Ss read the email and peer-check -Get WC FB

Stage 3 (Useful Language) (5-7 minutes) • To get Ss to notice the organization of the text

-GW -Ss read the email again -Ss check which of the ideas in the mind-map Chiara writes about -Set a time limit of 2 min -Tell the Ss not to worry about spelling mistakes -ICQ -Pass out HO1 -Ss check in their groups -Get WC FB, and tick the correct items of the mind-map on the WB -GW -Ss keep the HO1 folded and look at the other side of the HO1 -Ss write what information about Chiara is given in each paragraph -Ss check their answers in their groups -Get WC FB -Write the info of each paragraph on the WB -GW (5/6 Ss) -Ss look at the email -Ss correct the spelling mistakes -Ss check in their groups -Each group tells the spelling for 1 word -Write the spellings on the WB

Stage 4 (Text Organization and Content) (4-5 minutes) • To incourage the Ss to notice the organization of the text

-GW -Show the email on the WB using projector2 -Write the name of different sections of email on the board -Ss match the section names to the email -Ss check in their groups -Get WC FB -CCQ to highlight and clarify the informal language in informal emails, and the way to start and finish informal emails How do we start the email? Can we write 'Dear' here? Why no? Do we use 'I am' or 'I'm' in an informal email? How do we finish the email? Can we use 'Love' here? Why no?

Stage 5 (Productive Task) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skill

-Instructions (Now you are going to write a similar email. Who are you going to write the email to? -Get WC FB -Instructions for HO2 Fold HO2 Make notes about this information -Pass out HO2 -Ss take notes about the information -Instruction for writing task Unfold HO2 Write your email -Monitor -Help -Take notes for delayed error correction (Stage 6)

Stage 6 (Feedback and Error Correction) (5-7 minutes) • To provide readership for the writing

-Give instructions Stick your emails on the walls Read other Ss' emails Decide who can be a good new penfriend for you -ICQ -Ss follow the instructions (If time) Ss take 1 email and sit down WC FB (Who can be a good friend for you?) Ss take out a pencil and peer-correct Monitor (If no time) Write errors on the WB Elicit corrections (Delayed error-correction)
