Arranging a friendly meeting
Beginner A1 level

Description

Materials

Abc Picture of 2 people having a conversation
Abc English Unlimited Beginner CB Audio track 1.58
Abc English Unlimited Beginner Student Book page 27 HO

Main Aims

  • Speaking

Subsidiary Aims

  • Practice of vocabulary for days of the week and telling the time

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

A photo of a young couple will project through the OHP, for which the SS are expected to assign names and guess what they're talking about in pairs.

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

SS are going to listen to the audio track to get the aim of the conversation and to understand the place and time of the meeting. Answers will be checked in pairs and correct answers will be provided on the WB. The words 'meeting' and 'busy' will be elicited and practised. They will listen a second time to do ex. 1b. Again they will check in pairs and receive O/C FB on the board.

Useful Language (14-15 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

All of the useful TL will be written on the board, then practised with regard to their intonations and stressed words. For some TL I might need to emphasize some extra points. Like the prepositions in, on, and at with places and times as well as the definite article for some places.

Productive Task(s) (19-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

SS will receive some HOs on which they can see some informations like weekdays, time, places, etc. This will serve as a controlled practice because in this stage I require the SS not to totally come up with the conversation with its details, but to be able to keep the conversation going using the given info and having correct sentences in terms of intonation and stress. The second activity will be a completly free one in which SS are supposed to conduct the conversation using their own personal preferences and possiblities. During this activity the students will mingle and talk to new partners. The length of this activity depends on time. Both of the above-mentioned stages are to be closely monitored, and interrupted for corrective FB anytime needed.

Feedback and Error Correction (4-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Corrective FB will be given anytime during the speaking activity, but in case there is time, some wrong sentences will go on the board and the SS will discuss and correct them. The correct forms will be emphasized
