Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide detailed listening practice using a text about pidgin English

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Using the smart board the teacher shows the students map of where English is an official language. Then sts are asked to discuss the following questions: -Why is English spoken in all of these countries? Given that it originates in England? -When did people in these parts started speaking English? -Do they speak the same English? What differences do they have? -What is pidgin English?

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Sts watch the video about pidgin English. Before they lesson they are provided with simple questions they have to answer while listening. -What is pidgin English? -Where is it spoken?

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Sts are asked to answer more specific questions about the video. -Where did pidgin come from? -How did it evolve? -What does "you likee" means in English? -Why is pidgin important for the people who speak it?

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Sts are asked to discuss in pairs the following questions. After that they share with the whole group their ideas. -Is pidgin English? why? -Is pidgin inferior to Standard English? why? -Do you think that pidgin the same as Dunglish?
