since the main aim of this lesson is to get the Ss write a formal letter , focusing on the differences between formal and informal letters will be helpful . a listening task will be used to commence the lesson. they will use detailed listening technique for listening to a conversation in which a man is complaining about a course package. what follows is reading of a formal letter written by the man using detailed reading skill. finally, they will write a letter

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- project the Power Point file and engage them by presenting the 1st then the 2nd slide. 1st slide: tell them this is the aim of the lesson : writing formal letter 2nd slide: ask about the differences between formal and informal letter by doing the matching task on the 2nd slide (work in pairs and WC answer check)

Exposure (10-13 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Side 3 : an advertisement related to the listening section Have you seen a similar advertisement? Have you tried it? look at the words 'boost' and 'unique' slide 4: vocabulary matching half of the class is group A, the other half is group B group A: 20 seconds to find and match the synonym(s) of 'boost' group B:20 seconds to find and match the synonym(s) of 'unique' check the answers with the WC regroup: Boost group in one line, Unique group in an other line. 1 S from Boost will be partner with 1 S from Unique slide 5: after instructions: Phillip has bought the Brain Boost. listen and answer the questions -pass out HO's with 3 listening related questions - play the file -Ss check answers with Partners - ask 3 different to come write the answers on the board - slide 6: set the character this is Phillip ,who has bought Brain Boost. does he seem happy? read the sentences and decide why is he unhappy with Brain Booster? check your answers with your partner check once more as a class

Useful Language (10-15 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

set pairs focus Ss attention on Phillip's letter 1. underline words or phrase used to write about his complaint 2.in what ways grammar and vocabulary of formal language is different from informal language? 3. discuss your answers pass out letter HO's when Ss are done, pass out answer HO's - put Ss in groups this paper has 9 words or phrases find their equivalents from Phillip's letter give HO's then when they are done, give the answers check how many correct answers did you get? go back to the letter what are phrases can be used in the letter of complaint? write some of Ss answers on the board

Productive Task(s) (13-18 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

- this is another advertisement - in your group think of 4 things that went wrong -handout -elicit information from Ss write some on the board -using the ideas on the board write a formal letter -( if time allows) do it in class

- exchange papers among Ss to see each other's letters
