Main Aims

  • To provide review, clarification and practice of milestone collocations (and a couple of extras) in the context of life events; e.g. get married, get a degree, retire

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in a role play in the context of life events

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T boards a visual of life events and asks SS if they can predict our topic for today. T elicits life's first milestone. SS then discuss with partner for a couple of minutes which milestones they have already passed in their lives. T monitors and takes notes of TL that is used, incorrectly used and not used.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

T shows visual of what she wants SS to do and instructs them to write on a piece of paper as in the example. When SS are ready, T instructs them to write down all the verbs they can think of for life events into the two categories. The team with the most words wins ... nothing. Give SS the answer key. Ss circle the ones they don't have. In WCFB, T asks for those words, boards them. T asks which words on the board-list are new.

Teach (8-12 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

T elicits the TL with anecdotes/definitions, etc. T concept checks with CCQs and a chronological cline. Highlight, models and drills for Pron. T elicits parts of speech and concept checks. Appropriacy for "pass away".

Test #2 (7-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

SS complete a gap fill task with the TL. Peer-check. WCFB.

Free practice (10-13 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T instructs class to be creative and even over the top. In pairs or small groups (depending on class size), SS role play being Turkish "teyzes" - aunties - who have met for a tea and are sharing the gossip of their friends and family. If there is enough time, they switch partners.

Feedback on Language (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with feedback on their language use.

T boards examples of good language and any problem areas that affect accurate production of the TL. Elicits correct language/reformulation from the SS.

• To recycle the TL

SS play a tic tac toe game in groups using the TL.
