Description

In this lesson students will practice gist and scan reading a conversation. After that they will focus on the questions and negative forms , and practice forming questions of there is/are. At the end they will do a speaking activity using questions and answers in a guessing game.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about a conversation in the context of Homes and Neighbourhoods

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Negative and Question forms of there is/are in the context of Homes

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

tell sts " I want to find a place to live in, where do I need to go?"get some answers and ask why did they say that. ask sts " what do you look for when moving to a new place?" tell students to ask and answer each others in pairs.

Pre-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Show the picture of the estate agent, ask students for some ideas. "What do you think they are doing?" present the new vocabulary with pictures and try to elicit the words from the students. What does the estate agent show you? Flat & house Public Transport: Do you come here by car or by public transport Hospital: Who goes there? Ill people or healthy people? Market: Where do people buy and sell things? Introduce the characters of the text: Mr&Mrs Walker and the Estate agent

Gist-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Read and listen to the conversation What's wrong? Sts read and listen then check in pairs WC feedback. Do you like the place?

Scan-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging scan reading task

this is a scan race activity divide the class into 4 groups Read a sentence on them Sts read and find the answer and race to the board to mark the clue and write their answer The first group to do this takes a point There are 6 sentences

Post-Reading Language focus (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

in the same groups Highlight the questions and the short answers (5 questions) Sts underline them on WB Write model sentences Is there a park? Yes, there is. No, there isn't There isn't a park Are there any schools? Yes, there are. No, there aren't There aren't any schools. elicit the form elicit some examples from students using prompts on WB

Controlled Practice 1 (4-6 minutes) • To provide controlled practice of the negative and question forms of there is/are

There are 8 sentences in different forms Sts need to write the sentences in another given form Rewrite the sentences (?,-,+) Feedback: PW and then WC feedback

Controlled Practice 2 (3-5 minutes) • To provide further controlled practice and questions for the speaking

There are 8 words Sts have tp form questions using is/are there make questions with the words.

Speaking (3-5 minutes) • To provide accuracy speaking practice in questions and answers using there is/are

Put sts in speaking lines sts use the questions from ex.2 ask and answer questions about your street
