Description

In this lesson, the students will practice reading through a text about a writer's ideas upon marriage. The students will look ot some wedding photos and will try to figure out the date and share their ideas about the statement 'marriage is thing of the past. They will read the text to understand if the writer agrees with this statement or not. And they will read again to match the sentences witht he paragraphs. Later, they will discuss some questions in pairs and as a whole class.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about 'marriage is a thing of the past'

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a debate in the context of marriage

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students look at the photos of some wedding ceremonies and try to guess their date.

Pre-Reading (7-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher distrubutes the reading text to the students and asks for unknown words and clarifies the meaning of some vocabulary items and expressions.

While-Reading #1 (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Students will read the text about a writer's comments on 'marriage is a thing of the past' and try to figure out if writer agrees with this statement or not. Then they will check their ideas with their partners.

While-Reading #2 (12-13 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Students do the activity 3 from Straightforward book. Read read the article again and put the sentences a-d in the gaps 1-4. Then they check their answers in pairs.

Post-Reading (11-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Teacher shows the discussion language on the board and tells students to use the language when they are discussing. Students discuss the question 'Is marriage changing in your country? Why?' in pairs and then they change their pairs and discuss the question 'What are the advantages and disadvantages of getting married?' and then they discuss the question 'At what age do people usually get married? ' as a whole class.

If time activity (6-7 minutes) • To provide students with a free speaking activity

Students read the text 'Did you know?' and discuss the questions 'Are they the same in your country? and What wedding traditions do you have in your country?' in groups.
