Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about means of transport in the context of travelling

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency & accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of travelling in Turkey/Istanbul
  • To provide clarification and practice of language used for take + person + time in the context of travelling from place to place

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (14-16 minutes) • To establish rapport with the class, set lesson context and engage students

T does a quick GTKY activity to establish rapport with the new group. T shows a visual of a world map and the two forms of transport, and asks Ss to do the discussion Qs from Ex 1a (PW). T nominates one student from each pair to FB on Q2 and boards any lexis relevant to the text, e.g. convenient, cheap, fast. Instruct Ss that they will read only the introduction to the article and will then make predictions from Ex 1b. Reformulate "easy" to convenient in Ex 1b if necessary. T elicits the meaning of "set off". WCFB and board the answers.

While-Reading #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist task: reading for main ideas

T instructs SS that they will be given the paragraphs of the reading and will have to put them in order for plane and for train. T hands out the cut up paragraphs and demonstrates the first for plane as WC and elicits why the SS chose that. Time limit 2 minutes. Ss complete the task and peer-check before WCFB.

While-Reading #2 (8-12 minutes) • To provide students with practice reading for detailed information and inference

T instructs SS to complete Ex 1d in pairs and peer-check with another pair. T monitors during peer-checking stage. Ss ask T if there are any answers they couldn't agree on.

Language Follow Up (5-7 minutes) • To provide clarification and practice of the phrase take + someone + time + infinitive

T boards example sentences and elicits MF from SS. T highlights P on board, models and drills. T elicits some example sentences from SS.

Follow up Speaking Task (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to practice fluency and accuracy (of the language focus)

T elicits lexis that will be useful in the discussion. Ss talk in groups about the different ways to travel around Turkey or Istanbul and which is the best, using the target language

Feedback on Language (3-4 minutes) • To provide students with feedback on their language use.

T boards examples of good language and any problem areas that affect accurate production of the TL. Elicits correct language/reformulation from the SS.
