Description

In this lesson, the Ss are going to learn unreal past conditionals (type 3) by using Test-teach-test. Then, they will practice writing conditional sentences type 3 by using some prompts.

Materials

Abc Test#1 HO
Abc Test#2 HO
Abc Writing HO ( If-time)

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of unreal past conditionals in the context of regret and advise in the past

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice by giving the Ss different prompts and asking them to write unreal past conditionals

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-greet the Ss -project two images of an imaginary S -ask the Ss to tell you what is going on in the two pics and want them to relate the two stories CCQs: Is this picture about present or past? How is he feeling? (bad, sad) Why? (He didn't study.) Why didn't he study? (He went to a party instead.)

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

-show and chest the test#1 HOs -explain that they are going to answer the Qs on their own -ICQs; What do u do? Do you answer the Qs with your partner or alone? -pass around the HOs -give them 5 min ( may be longer time needed) -Ss do it on their own -check in pairs - project test#1 -ask Ss all at once to come to the board and write the answers -check with the whole class

Teach (9-12 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

-write one or two sentences of test #1 on the board -clarify the meaning -CCQs: Is it about past or present? Did he go to a party or did he study his lessons? How does he feel now? Why? -timeline on the board -break the form (+, - , ?) -work on pronunciation

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

-show and chest Test#2 HO -tell the Ss they are going to work in groups of three (or four) -explain they are going to match the beginnings with the endings and put them on the wall -ICQs: What do you do? Do you write the sentences? Do you put them on the wall? Alone or in groups? -Ss do the task in groups and put the papers on the wall -(T) check the papers and announce the which group got it right -give all the Ss the answer key HO

Free practice (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-show and chest the writing HO (or test#2 again) -tell the Ss they are going to work alone to write unreal past conditionals -ICQs: What do you do? Do you write sentences about present or past? Do you do it alone or in groups? -Ss do the task on their own -ask them to share ideas in pairs (S A stands up and changes seat) -ask Ss to read their sentences out to class
