Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

On WB : Derivatives are financial instruments that allow investors to speculate on the future price of commodities or shares - without buying the underlying investment. Derivatives like futures, options and swaps were developed to allow investors to hedge risks in financial markets. On WB : stocks / currency / commodities (wheat, maize, beef, sugar, tea, coffee, oil, gold) - derivatives is a collective term, and consists of futures, options & swaps.

Exposure (20 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Use Unit 19, Derivatives, Pg 90, Q1 - Use Teacher's Answer sheet Pg 83

Clarification (10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Continue Pg 83 Q2 - PW to create correct phrases from 2 coloured boxes. WC to confirm

Language Focus (20 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for phrases used in clarification.

On WB create 3 columns according to LF Pg 92 Q1 PW to complete 1-12 WC to confirm.

Sentence Construction correction (10 minutes) • To concept check and correct where necessary the sentence constructions of lists

Make a list of words and on WB, write the following sentence to be corrected by teams: Unit 19 explains Derivatives which are very difficult to understand. This unit includes words and phrases like stock and currency and commodities and futures and options and swaps and hedge and speculate and premium and exercise. Show class where commas should be inserted.
