To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about regrets in a context where three people talk about regrets in their lives
To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in which (context) the Ss give advice and suggestions using "should" or "shouldn't have"
Procedure (40-47 minutes)
-project/ write the questions about regret on the board If you could live your life over again, what would you do differently? What would you do the same? -Explain what the questions mean clearly -Tell the Ss to think about it for a minute -Tell the Ss they are going to talk in pairs and answer the Qs -Ask different Ss from different groups to tell the class their answers
-pre-teach the vocabulary: -chest and show the Ss the matching HOs -explain that the Ss are going to do a matching exercise -Ss do the task on their own for 2 min -Ss check with their partners -project the HO -give each pair a marker -Ask one S from each pair to come to the board to write the answers on the board - Check the answers with the class -work on meaning, form and pronunciation -CCQs
-project the picture of the three people on the board -introduce them: What is his/her name? What does she do? -ask the Ss what they guess these people are going to talk about -show the Ss the reading HOs -explain that they are going to read the text and match the paragraphs with the correct picture on the board -CCQs: What are you going to do? Do you write the answers or do you match? -pass the HOs round the class -make sure all Ss start together -give them 3 min to match the pics with the paragraphs -Ss check in pairs -ask individual Ss the Qs and write/confirm the correct answers on the board
-show the Ss the detailed HOs -explain that they are going to read the text one more time and answer the Qs ICQs: Do you read the text again? Do you write the answer or do you choose the correct answer? -pass the HOs round -make sure everybody start at the same time -Ss do the task for 4 min -Ss check in pairs for 2 min -project the detail HO -ask the Ss to come and write the answers on the board - ask if the answers are right and ask for reasons -write /confirm the correct answers
-project the pic of the three people again -tell the Ss they are going to work in pairs -tell them they are going to give these people advise about now and about the past -tell them to use "should" and "should have done" -give them 3 min to work together -regroup the Ss and tell them to share their ideas(2 min) -ask different Ss about their advice or suggestions -discuss as with the whole class
